KPackage maybe? I prefer Synaptic myself, but that's far less likely to stick with changes than Adept is.

      Then either:

      1. Don't use Kubuntu
      2. Learn to install the newest software the hard way... usually from source.

Kubuntu/Ubuntu is not a distribution that stays on the cutting edge. Gentoo may be a better choice for you, if that's what you want.

It stocks what the repositories you give it have.

you might want to go in and enable some of the ones that are disabled at the moment.
        also add these

        ## PLF repositories, contains litigious packages, see http://wiki.ubuntu-fr.org/doc/plf
        deb http://antesis.freecontrib.org/mirrors/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free
        deb-src http://antesis.freecontrib.org/mirrors/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free

        ## Freecontrib, funny packages by the Ubuntu PLF Team
        deb http://antesis.freecontrib.org/mirro...u/freecontrib/ breezy free non-free
        deb-src http://antesis.freecontrib.org/mirro...u/freecontrib/ breezy free non-free

they have all the things like RealPlayer Java Mplayer Skype Amule Acrobat MP3 support. basically anything that can't be included due to license issue.

as far as something else....well package management is the bain..or is it bane...of the linux users existence. The grass is always greener untill you see the next lawn.
