I have a Knetwork button on the panel and it is also listed in the K menu but when I click on either nothing happens ( hence i cannot connect to any network ).
Any ideas?

Let's just put this one down to my status as a newbie. All is working fine now. The problem was that KnetworkManager was already open and had minimised to the panel, hence when I tried to open it again it wouldn't because on the invisible screen was displaying a message " You idiot - the program is already open !"
