    Can't connect to internet (edit)

    I'm using 6.06

It seems my wireless card is recognized, the Wireless Assistant (wlanassistant) sees my router.

I know it is open system, WEP, with a hex key (auto DHCP).

It keeps telling me "unable to connect to network", but doesn't say why.

Strangely, the "link" light on my card is lit up, which usually means I'm connected.

    Any suggestions?

Are you running, or behind, any kind of firewall? From a Konsole session, can you successfully ping?

      Re: Can't connect to internet

      I'm quite the newbie here.

I tried "ping 192.168.1.1" and it replied "Network is unreachable".

My routers firewall is turned off, and it does not see the Kubuntu machine.
      ___

I tried disabling the security key on my router, and reset the settings - no avail.

Is there anywhere I could find any error messages it received?
      ___

I erased some of my network settings and tried again.

Now, I can connect to the internet as long as I have WEP disabled on my router. As soon as I turn it back on, I can't connect.

Settings on the router match those of the network assistant - auto DCHP, open system, etc.

My key is a hex key, I'm assuming by leaving "ASCII" unchecked, it is assuming hex mode.

Either way, I tried it's ASCII equivelent, but no luck.

Is it possible the hardware is incapable of WEP?

I've never used this computer with any other OS.

Please take a look at this page at the Ubuntu Community Help Wiki and some of the references on that page. I'm no wireless expert, but even I know that, if your hardware can do it, WPA is MUCH better than WEP.

I had this problem with my laptop. I tried everything I could to get it to connect. I very carefully entered the WEP key, but still no luck. Finally, I went into the router, and changed the WEP key and saved the new settings, went to the laptop and entered the new settings and it worked. I don't know why this worked but it did. You might try that.
