Does anyone use parallel booting to speed up the boot process? And if so, it is worth the effort (as I've read that there quite a risk involved to end up with a broken box)? I mean, what percentage of your boot time can you expect to save?

Short answer: Don't bother.

Long answer: Speeding up the boot process has been a concern of the Ubuntu developers for a while now. The first thing they did was the controversial switch from Bash to Dash between Dapper and Edgy. More recently, they stopped using the standard SysVinit program. Feisty uses a new boot program called "Upstart". I recall seeing an article about Upstart at Linux.com. I believe it offers many of the advantages of parallel booting with the advantage that the distro developers will maintain it.
