You have my sympathy. I have a Dell I-600M. Please take a look at this page on the Ubuntu community Wiki. There are also some sites devoted to the general topic of linux on laptops. You can find them at google/linux.
I just installed 7.04 on mine... Only problem is getting my internet WiFi card to work... I got one working through PCMCIA but the internal card (i think its a Broadcom WiFi adapter) isn't "enabling" under eth1...
I will probably post about this somewhere else but heres what happens:
> sudo ifup eth1
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
Failed to bring up eth1.
I will be searching the kubuntu forums until I find out how to fix this
