    Ktorrent update effects performance

Kubuntu 6.06 was flying along on a 800MHz Pentium 3 machine with 512MB RAM until I updated Ktorrent from 2.1-0unbuntu2-dapper1 to 2.1.4-0ubuntu1-dapper1. Now the system just crawls. Some applications, such as Open Office word processing, will just not run at all; some will run very, very slowly.

There were three updates available thru Adept at the time I updated. Ktorrent, libsnmp-base and libsnmp9. I installed all three.

On another machine with similar specs, I took only the lib updates and passed on the Ktorrent update. No issues on the second machine. System performance is still impressive.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to regain system performance? I was tempted to uninstall Ktorrent and received a warning that an uninstall will effect the KDE desktop. I'm still new enough to be quite nervous about messing with the desktop, so I backed out of the uninstall.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hmm - is cpu load high or what ?

    From
    Code:
    :~$ apt-cache show kubuntu-desktop
    Description: Kubuntu desktop system

This package depends on all of the packages in the Kubuntu desktop system
    And the important part
It is safe to remove this package if some of the desktop system packages are
    not desired.

      Thanks for your reply.

The CPU seems to be fairly normal (less than 90%.) The memory, however, is almost maxed out even though I can't see any running processes. I'm sure the processes are there, I'm just such a newbie I don't know what I'm looking at.

        You could try:

        Remove and reinstall ktorrent
        sometimes this helps.

        or

        Downgrade back to ktorrent 2.1-0unbuntu2-dapper1
Check if /var/cache/apt/archives/ still has this package.
It should, if you haven't cleaned local package archives.

          Re: Ktorrent update effects performance

Thanks so much for your help! I'll give the uninstall/re-install process a try.

It's just crazy that something like Ktorrent would effect overall system performance. Just doesn't make any sense to me. But hey, I'm a newbie.

          Thanks again!
