Kate editor - use of regular expressions in replace (find/replace)

The dialog box for Find/Replace in Kate has a box to check if the string searched for is a regular expression, but I see nothing similar for the replacement string.

I would like to replace a string with that same string followed by a tab, but \t is not producing a tab when I use it in a replacement string and I haven't found another way to do it.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I have Kate 2.4.1 (using KDE 3.4.3)
