In Ubuntu/Kubunut one should strive to install software via Adept/Synaptic.

Open Adept/Synaptic and search fro Xine.

You can get all the info on installing packages from http://kubuntu.org/docs/kquickguide/C/ch02s07.html

Yes, i know how to use adept.. but if i download a program it's not listed in adept...

And that only works for rpms? correct?

i havent found a xine rpm..

I tried to install xine with the commands.

      ./configure

      Make

      Make install..

But it said some odd things and i dont bealive it worked... maybe im missing a library or something?

Xine is in Adept. You just may not have the right repositories enabled.

Quite the opposite, actually. First of all, you don't need to worry about .rpms or .debs for Xine. Xine is a standard package that you can install through Adept. Adept will take care of downloading and installing everything for you. If you use Adept, you won't ever see these .rpms or .debs.

Secondly, Adept in Kubuntu uses .deb files, not .rpms. You can use .rpms in Kubuntu, but they're non-native and need to be translated. For more on all the different ways to install software in Kubuntu, read this.

Why? Don't install from source unless you have to. It's easier not to, and it's easier then to update the package later.

Thanks... I installed Xine... had to allow universe reposotries..

But anyways... if i HAD to install from source... why do i get these errors... Do i need some libraries installed or what?

            Apt-get/Adept/Synaptic install dependencies for you.

            Installing from source does not.

you would get the errors for dependencies problems, but also it maybe a gcc error...i am not sure if kubuntu install with gcc make etc..

It's not easy, but it can be done. You just need to install the build-essential package.
