    Midi and Synth configure

OK, how do I get the MIDI and Synth devices turned on?
    KInfoCenter gives me:
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.9 emulation code)

    Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-10-amd64-k8 #1 Fri Nov 18 ...
    Card Config:
    NVidia CK804 with ALC655 at 0xfebfd000, irq 22
    Audio devices:
    0: NVidia CK804 (DUPLEX)
Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

The system makes sound for system events (Like boot-up). It also plays CD's just fine, but is silent during Armagetron and Tux-Racer

What command do I need to run, and/or file to edit to fix this?

    Thanks.

    Re: Midi and Synth configure

I should have known: The chipset is NForce4, it needs the latest Nvidia drivers, which have not made it yet into the repositories.

I tried to compile them, and made the mistake of installing the 4.0 versions of the compiler/utilities. Since the kernel was compiled under 3.4, the Nvidia script wants g++ to be 3.4 as well.

    So...
Since Kubuntu installed without a compiler, and I had to install it, I assumed that I could just uninstall gcc, and g++, etc., then install the 3.4 versions and be good to go.

    Now ...
Could someone explain to me why uninstalling the compiler also took out about 1/3 of my system, including apt-get and Adept? I re-installed from the CD-ROM and my system is busy downloading the upgrades via 56K modem again now that I am at work. When that is done, I'll try to install g++ 3.4 and have another go at the NForce drivers.
