    Problem installing vlc

    Hi All,

Installed Kubuntu a couple of days ago, this is the first time i'm using Linux at all.
I tried installing vlc but all I get is:
    dawall@dawall:/$ sudo apt-get install vlc
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc: Depends: libwxgtk2.6-0 (>= 2.6.1.2ubuntu2) but it is not going to be installed
    E: Broken packages

Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    Can someone help me?

    Thanx in advance...

    /Andreas

    Re: Problem installing vlc

You've tried to install an application that requires another package to meet all the 'dependancies' in order to install. The additional package that is missing/not installed is libwxgtk2.6-0. A quick Google search finds that this is a package (Debian) for an 'unstable' release. That doesn't mean (necessarily) that you can't install/run the application in your installation (by the way, what release of Kubuntu did you install?), but this additional package would have to be installed. The following from http://wxwidgets.org/downloads/#latest_stable:

wxGTK Ubuntu packages for 2.8.3 are available. To use them please add
    deb http://apt.tt-solutions.com/ubuntu/ dapper main
(or edgy instead of dapper if you use that release) to your /etc/apt/sources.list file and add the public key used for signing wxWidgets packages to the list of keys trusted by apt using the command
    curl http://www.tt-solutions.com/vz/key.asc | apt-key add -
and run apt-get update. You can then use
apt-cache search --names-only wx\*2.8 command to see the available packages.
Please notice that Ubuntu packages are only currently available for Dapper x86 and Edgy amd64 architectures.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

      Re: Problem installing vlc

      thanx for the help =)

It still doesn't work though =(

      I have Kubuntu 6.06.

added link in sources.list and ran the curl command.
      did apt-get update
searched for wx\*2.8, as described, and installed the packages I found ther (don't know if that was right...?)

i still get the same error when trying to install vlc.

if I try to install libwxgtk2.6-0:

      dawall@dawall:~$ sudo apt-get install libwxgtk2.6-0
      Reading package lists... Done
      Building dependency tree... Done

      dawall@dawall:~$

      .....it says the above....

I don't know where to go from here.

Does anyone have anything else to recommend in watching videofiles, mainly .avi??

      ...thanx
