I am a "newbie" thinking about downloading kubuntu. I need to know if my expensive InDesign/PhotoShop/Illustrator and other Adobe programs and Quark will work with this operating system... also, what exactly is the difference between the kde and gnome? thanks for any help you can offer!

Here is the information about Gnome vs. KDE:

Can't answer about your Win apps -- you've got Wine, VMWare, Win4Lin, and other ways to bring them along -- some better than others. And you've got Linux analogues, although PhotoShop is arguably superior to gimp.

As to an explanation of the differences (and the similarities) of KDE vs GNOME, take a look at:

As to the question of running your Windows apps in Linux, you should take a look at the Wine application:

Or try Codeweaver's Crossover too for Windoze apps. I have only tried it for MS Office 2003 but I heard it is good for Photoshop and other Adobe softwares too. Its not free though (around $60 for the pro version) but I'm sure you wouldn't mind spending that amount for a good piece of software because the softwares in your collections cost more than 15 times as much.

In a word: Yes.
I did it this way:

If you have a seperate partition for your data you can use samba to share between your virtual windows and kubuntui.
