I've downloaded several files with the tar.gz extension and can't find, open, or install them in Kubuntu!

The following is a true story. Back in 1995, I decided to try OS/2. It didn't come with a driver for my modem. So I wrote a letter to IBM asking for one. They were very helpful, and sent me a large package in the US mail. It was a driver developer's guide, a booklet on OS/2 kernel information, and a thick book on the architechture of the PPC 601 (for good measure, perhaps?) that had "IBM Internal Use Only" on it and a white "Declassified" sticker over that. I never did get my modem working in OS/2. It did work in Windows 95 though.
Anyhoo...
Right click on your tar.gz file.
Click Open With Ark.
Click the fifth button from the left, or go to Action, then Extract.
As for installing, the easiest thing for me to say is this: you're going about this the hard way if you're trying to install. You have (most likely) downloaded source and must compile it.
For installing, use K Menu and Add/Remove Programs instead.
Or, K Menu, System, Adept Manager.

You should be able to open any .tar.gz by just clicking on it (this will open up Ark, the archive manager program) and then clicking the purple "Up" arrow. More details here:

But you also shouldn't need a .tar.gz to install programs. More details here:
