    a problem with WINE

before I say anything, you should know that I am 'completely' new to kubuntu.

I have installed wine following the instructions from the winehq website, and first up, I installed gomplayer (my choice as the most sufficient media player in the world! ).
The installation process went very smoothly. When it was fully installed, I tried to play an avi video file, but it came up with an error message saying that it couldn't find the right codec! (by the way, the only reason why I use gomplayer is because USUALLY, it contains all the codecs required and I never have to go looking for them) >
I found it quite very strange because on gomplayer running in windows, the same avi file ran with no problems.
Later, I tried to install a game off a cd. The cd didn't go through autorun, so I ran the setup.exe myself, but nothing happened, and for a sec, I thought that I didn't click properly and tried again, but nothing happened at all. The cd span and looked like it was gonna run then it just stopped.

Is there something wrong with wine or am I just not using it properly?

The codec is probably XviD. If you are running wine you might have to have the Windows version.

"AVI format, encoded with the free XviD codec, compatible with media players available for almost all popular desktop PC operating systems. If your computer does not have the XviD codec installed, you can get it here or through your favorite free operating system's software repository. Windows and Mac users can find easy-to-install XviD" from http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

It is still strange, because the gomplayer I am currently running is the windows version, and normally with gomplayer, the codecs are all built in so that I don't have to installed them separately...

Yes, since you are running under Wine you have the Windows version of Gomplayer - but I am saying that you should try the Windows version of XviD.

could you tell me why gomplayer is not running properly? - is there something wrong with wine itself?
