Mounting Mac hard drive

I'm considering installing Kubuntu on a slightly older iMac that I have. I of course, however, want to still access everything on OS X partition.

Before I do this though I was going to test everything using the LiveCD I created.

I was wondering if you guys had anything to add to this?

Also, I currently have it set so that it requires a password to sign in. I would like it to stay that way (I'm becoming more paranoid about my computer, that's one of the main reasons I'm switching to Linux, to decrease the odds of being hacked ). I was wondering if the mounted drive (either on the LiveCD or on the fully installed Linux) would still be password protected or if I would have to jump through more hoops to ensure that the drive is still password protected.

What do you gain in functionality by replacing the BSD based OS X with Linux?

Both are Unix-like systems btw.

If McApple use the normal BSD filesystems it uses both UFS and FSS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Fast_File_System UFS is for the OS and FSS for your data area.

Getting acces was not possible for me from Linux to these. Rather I would copy the data to Linux. Burn a CD or upload them to a website, use an USB stick etc etc.

If you want Linux, get a used Laptop. Get at least Pentium III or you'll have to use Damn Small Linux (as I did on a PII) or do a difficult recompilling of a Linux kernel. I hate that.

You can perhaps even hook the laptop up to your big monitor.
