KDE unable to start - Help!

    Hi everyone,

I'm actually a Xandros user, but I'm having problems with KDE not starting and my friend suggested I post on here too because Kubuntu uses KDE too, and it's always worth getting help from as many sources as possible.

I installed Xandros 4 a few months ago and I've been messing around with settings and getting used to how it runs. Tonight I was playing around in control centre with various different settings including lastly enabling the 3D desktop. I'm going to be as clear as possible about what happened so bear with me.

When I rebooted the first time, instead of the usual GUI coming up and asking for username and password a black DOS style screen appeared asking me to log in. I shut down and used the restore function on the installation CD.

The next time I started up the computer, it came into the normal GUI for logging in, but when it went onto the splash screen a message came up and it got stuck on the first part. I've written the message out below:

"There was an error setting up interprocess communication for KDE.
The message returned by the system was: Could not read network connection list
    /home/simeon/.DOCPserver_AGAMEMNON_0
Please check that 'dcopserver' program is running!"

It also came up with a second message as follows:

"The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE:
    No write access to '/home/simeon.ICEauthority'.
    KDE is unable to start.

The final message it gave was:

"Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation."

After you click 'ok' on the final message, it goes back to the login GUI. I can login as administrator and I think I can login under safe video mode too. Everything just goes wrong when I try to login under my normal username.

I posted on the Xandros forums and someone suggested doing this:

"First, log into 'expert Mode, enter your root password, and type the two following commands:
rm /home/simeon/.ICEauthority (it is case sensitive and the dot (.) is necessary)
    reboot
When the screen comes back to boot Xandros, chose safe Video Mode, log in, go into the control panel and disable 3d Desktop.. Then reboot.."

This sorted out the problem for about three restarts and now it's gone back to showing exactly the same message. Does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?

Re: KDE unable to start - Help!

Well if you can log into the admn. acct. O.K. you could try creating a new user acct. and see if you can log into it normally.
If you can, then you can backup any data you had in your old user acct., then delete and recreate it. Admittedly that's a shotgun approach, there may be a more elegant solution.
