IBM Thinkpad R50e installation- monitor detection

I tried out Ubuntu on this laptop, and it worked awesome! In fact it kicked Windows XP butt, and the laptop was designed for that OS! The only think that went "wrong" was that the screen right before the login had verticle scrambled lines instead of the background, and the monitor was at 0htz, unadjustable, so I figure some xorg config maybe would have fixed it? Anyway I digress...to the point: I like KDE and wish to switch to Kubuntu on the same laptop. Will the OS do the same thing, and does anyone have any suggestions for me for the installation to maybe detect the LCD correctly? Thanx!!!
