In regards to font quality on linux and windows, you will see a major difference in quality from Windows to Linux (choppy, poor)

If you have a TFT then sub-pixel hinting will make the text look fuzzy. Switch it off. As for the rest I've never gotten the fonts looking the same in Windows and Linux; but going from the latter to the former makes Windows' font drawing look like a three-year-old's. Just my two-pennyworth.

Software alternatives you recommend for the below (if they do not originally exist for linux at the moment)

- ccleaner
- spyware blaster
- spybot
- roboform
- avg anti-virus
- roxio digital media studio deluxe
- ms expression web
- securecrt

OK, I had to google most of these to work out exactly what they were...

Anti-spyware/anti-virus - not needed since there is (essentially) no spyware for Linux, and very few if any viruses that have any effect. Indeed, most virus-scanners for Linux concentrate on detecting Windows viruses. (Check out ClamAV.)

Roboform - KWallet, if you're using Konqueror as your web browser (and probably other KDE apps too) - installed by default

CCleaner - someone wrote a script and posted it somewhere here, search the forums.

Roxio - K3b, installed by default

MS Expression Web - Quanta Plus. I presume you know a bit of HTML and aren't afraid to use it. If not - it's really not that hard to get started. (As an aside: Google tells me "Expression Web is a professional design tool to create modern, standards-based sites which deliver superior quality on the Web." I haven't yet stopped laughing that half the pages on the Expression Web site don't even have a doctype.)

SecureCRT - an SSH client is actually built in to almost all *nix installations. Konqueror can handle SFTP and SSH file transfer (fish:/user@host or sftp:/user@host). Or just type "ssh user@host" into a terminal.

Jumping back slightly:

For a linux newbie coming from Windows, now testing Kubuntu 7 beta, what recommended download software do you recommend? Also, is Beryl / Compaz part of Kubuntu by default? Haven't had a chance to test completely. Was just in and out for now as I've just installed an hour ago. What software managers should I install to enable the easiest possible quick downloads/install of software without the need to learn command line.

It is a lot easier and simpler to install software using Adept (or Synaptic, or command-line apt-get) than to search the web for software to install. A lot of people migrating from Windows forget that there are 20,000+ packages all designed and built to install and Just Work in a few clicks, and spend their time asking "I got this program from website X, how do I install it, I just get a folder with lots of .c files in and when I say make it says 'command not found' and..."

Now, I love compiling from source, but if there are pre-packaged alternatives (and there usually are!) there isn't much point for most uses!
