diagonal lines on monitor

I just got a new motherboard and CPU. I also just installed kubuntu. At random (so far as I can tell) there are diagonal lines of colour across my monitor. I can't see anything, and the whole computer is locked.

It started on the default VESA driver. I switched to the official Nvidia driver and it still happened.

My motherboard is BIOSTAR GEFORCE 6100-M9 Socket 939. The CPU is AMD Athalon 64 3400+. I am running 32 bit Kubuntu.

For starters, you may revert to a "real" live system with good hardware recognition (or, in short: Knoppix) to verify the status of your new hardware - and, provided, this worked, gather information on how to set things up properly ...
