    KDE won't power down

    Hi,
I've been trying my best to figure this problem out, searching forums and trying various things, but I'm smack out of ideas. I had 6.06 Ubuntu on my laptop and now I installed 6.10 Kubuntu from scratch. In Gnome, my computer shut off and hibernated just fine, but now it doesn't. It appears to lock up when the hibernate or powerdown reaches the end at which point I can hold down the power button and boot up again just fine later (even restore the hibernation). Restarting seems to work just fine

    I've tried:
-adding 'apm=off acpi=on' to my boot script
-'poweroff -h now' in a terminal
    -removing the # in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc for TermateServer=true
    -apm=poweroff in the boot script
    -acpi=force in the boot script
-various permutations of the above (apm=on acpi=off, etc)

Those were about the only suggestions I could find on the web. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Nick

No reply; just adding myself in case you get any sensible answer.

Hmmm, are you sure apm is installed? I know that's probably obvious, but I've compared my 6.06 and 6.10 installations, and I note that the 6.10 installation does not have apmd installed by default. Perhaps your laptop is happier with apm? Some older laptops had buggy ACPI implementations.

        I'm having similar issues.

        Here is my recent thread...

And here is my bug post...
        https://launchpad.net/bugs/94161

        I'm using
        Code:
         sudo powerdown now
to get it to shutdown. No other command seem to work for me.

I have apmd installed as well as all the appropriate acpi devices as well. Thanks for the suggestion though.

'sudo shudown now' locks up my machine before my settings are even all saved. The shutdown bar doesn't reach completion, I get no keyboard interrupt light flashes, and when I manually hold down the power button to power off and then restart a lot of my settings have not been updated. However, all suggestions are appreciated. I really want to get this problem solved!

          Thanks,
          -Nick

Out of curiosity, have you tried fiesty? I am not usually one to go to a beta but I could never get everthing right on edgy. If I did get something fixed something else would break. These are the same machines I installed dapper on and had no problems once I found out how to install the ati drivers. If you have a chance, try feisty herd 5. I had to use the alternate install. Also, if the initial update fails do the apt-get update then apt-get upgrade in konsole and those initial updates go in fine. As a bonus, I was able to get full functionality of my wireless card too.

how do I upgrade? I figured I'd have enough of a problem with a new OS that I wouldn't dive into a Beta version. But maybe it is the answer I'm looking for. What do I need to do to update?

http://kubuntu.org/announcements/7.04-beta.php Here is a link to where it is. I would get the torrent. It is usually a bit faster after it gets going. Again, it might be best to get the alternate cd just to be safe. It works better with some trouble hardware. I am on herd5 and am getting the beta as we speak for another machine I am putting together.

https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuDistUpgrade if you have a working edgy system. My video card didn't work well with edgy so I went the full install method.

Try it and let is know how it goes.
