Unable to adjust widescreen notebook monitor

I just installed Kubuntu after some bad luck with SuSE. I heard Ubuntu was even easier for newbies.
But! Even though the installation went fine, I can't setup my monitor properly. I've got a 1280x800 widescreen monitor, so the 1024x768 setting looks plain ugly.
Unfortunately there's no slidebar where I can adjust my resolution, so I figured I had to input what kind of monitor I have. From the Generic list I chose 'flatpanel 1280x800'. But when I try testing this, my screen goes black and it doesn't go back. (Which rhymes, so it's true.)
If I don't test and just click Apply, after a warning it says something about logging off my X something session from the menu below. But there's no menu!

Probably a really dumb question, but hey, that's what this forum's for, right?

Please note that I'm writing this from XP because I still need to get my WLAN working in Kubuntu. But first things first. Thanks for your help!

I'm sorry, I completely forgot. I've got an Asus Z92U-B099H.
