Blue screen and audio in dvd's all multimedia

Hi, I had installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo), and upgraded to edgy - then installed kubuntu-desktop and alot of KDE 'gumf'.

    I have a problem when playing DVD's -

There is perfect sound, but the picture is blue.

I have installed libdvdcss2 libdvdread3 w32codecs and tried it on virtually all programs I can find.

I've been trying this for over a day now and it's becoming very, very frustrating!!

A little help would be great, as in an explanation, not just links to pages I've undoubteably read and worked through.

    Thank you very, very much

    OK,

open a terminal (shell) and start your favourite dvd programme (I use VLC). In my case I'd simply type "vlc" on the command line. Start your DVD and wait until the screen turns blue. Switch back to the shell and read the output. If you can make sense of it, fine. If not, select and middle click so we can see what is going on - hopefully we can sort it out

@toad - thanks I'm about to do what you suggest and post the output, but in the meantime some more info

      -----------

Originally my setup for graphics card is set to vesa in xserver-xorg under "Driver"

This displays things OK(ish) apart from my browser is extremely "choppy" when scrolling vertically (virtually unusable)

lspci -v shows this for my card?

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UniChrome Pro IGP (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Fujitsu Siemens Computer GmbH Unknown device 10cd
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
      Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
      Memory at d1000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
      Capabilities: <access denied>

So.... I follow this guide to install the (correct??) driver for my card

      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

After that the browser problem disappears, but I get a blue screen when playing DVD's, and yes you guessed it when using vesa driver I can view DVD's (not perfectly, the picture stutters abit)

Many thanks I'm going to check what you suggest now

Right, I googled your shell messages and it spat out this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=159051 - and they are talking kaffeine, too

BTW, you got hardware acceleration working? Unfortunately I am not familiar with your graphics card as I'm on NVIDIA...

            All the best

              You beautiful person you

I'm not going to try and understand why, but changing the video driver to xshm seemed to do the job.

I like this an OS, but I can certainly see why people are apprehensive about making the jump - still its fun, have no doubt I'll be posting again soon

              Thanks again
