    Shut down bug

I've had a problem with restart and shut down. And wasn't sure what add on is interfering with my linux install. To simplify the troubleshooting I formated my linux partition, and reinstalled Kubuntu 6.10. and fetched updates. I tested the shut down and restart several times and everything functioned normally. So I started putting in the add ons and started with my wireless network card as described here. and I installed knetworkmanager.

Afterwards my computer doesn't want to behave properly when shutting down or restarting.

K -> Log Out -> Shutdown = computer hangs up, sometimes scrambled screen
K -> Log Out -> Restart = computer hangs up
Terminal -> poweroff now = computer hangs up
Terminal -> shutdown now = computer turns off

So, other than doing a shutdown with "shudown now" and then restarting from a cold boot, what can I do to fix this bug.

    Thanks

(for now I get to start reinstalling beryl and wine and....)

You using fglrx driver and/or DVI output (try VGA if so) to monitor by any chance?

I have no idea. How do I find out? I could find this out in windows. Monitor & Display, hardware tab, says both graphics card and driver say i810. (intel brand, not sure what 810 stands for)

You are definitely not using fglrx drivers (that's for ATI Radeon cards).

As for DVI, that is digital ouput of display.

Look at the connector on your monitor cable. Which one is it like?

        VGA: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...e/VGA_plug.jpg

Try posting the output of glxinfo in konsole.

Monitor is connected to the laptop so no cord. since I never even heard of a DVI monitor I'm leaning towards VGA.

I believe i810 is the graphics card driver you are using.

A bug has been filed on Launchpad for the i810 driver on crashing after suspend so I think you should check it out.

              Re: Shut down bug

The above link was informative, but not exactly the same bug, and no solutions to their bug, or mine.

I found this tidbit (researching something else)
              4.2.6. Shutdown

UNIX was not made to be shut down, but if you really must, use the shutdown command. After completing the shutdown procedure, the -h option will halt the system, while -r will reboot it.

The reboot and halt commands are now able to invoke shutdown if run when the system is in run levels 1-5, and thus ensure proper shutdown of the system, but it is a bad habit to get into, as not all UNIX/Linux versions have this feature.

If your computer does not power itself down, you should not turn off the computer until you see a message indicating that the system is halted or finished shutting down, in order to give the system the time to unmount all partitions. Being impatient may cause data loss.
Is this true? This could explain some of my "other" bugs, including loosing my Beryl settings and other settings.
