    Now what????

    hey everyone,
    i'm totally, completely linux stoopid
i want to try going to kubuntu instead of vista, so i downloaded CD and used it as a boot disk. Now i'm at a prompt, not sure how to proceed with installation...don't want to install from windows. i'm reading up on linux and commands, but i need a little direction. what commands can i use to proceed with install and reach a GUI i can understand :P
    thanks,
    brian

    Re: Now what?

    suggestion:
get yourself the kubuntu DESKTOP CD (that is, live+install).
    http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php#latest
    boot with that first.
you can then play about with kubuntu to see how your system works.
if it looks all right, then click the install icon and follow the gui installation procedure.
when you get to disk partitioning, make sure you create a big enough swap partition.
i'd make that at least as big as ram (if not twice as big).

      Re: Now what?

that is what i downloaded. the 6.1 CD. I pop it in, boot up, get a screen and hit enter for install, it runs a bit, then command prompt. Problem is right now i'm locked out of windows so i want to install kubuntu and reformat drive completely. no widows

        Re: Now what?

        mmm...

does the live system work all right?
i mean, when you get the live cd booted and you get into kde...
before you hit the "install" icon...
        can you work?
        do you see your disks?
can you get your net connection up and running?
        etc. etc.

pls, post your system's specs (cpu, disks, net card, graphics card, ...), as well.
someone out there may have similar, if not the same specs, and may be able to help with specific issues...

            Re: Now what?

There have been some reports recently of partial installations from what turned out to be bad CD burns. If it will not run in "live CD" mode, then that's probably what has happened. Make sure you do the md5 check on your ISO image, and then burn a new CD and see if that solves the problem.
