    A few simple (?) questions…

First off I’m a total noob to Linux and computing. I have only had a home computer now for about 3 years (with no internet). I found Kubuntu 3 weeks ago and have been playing with the live cd and some other distro’s and now want to install Kubuntu. I have read this forum and lots of links on Kubuntu / Ubuntu to try and prepare myself as best I can for the install and workings of the OS.

Ok. Here’s what I’m running and my questions. Thanks for the any help.

Dell optiplex gx-270, 3. MH, 1gig ram, 80 gig HD with 300gig USB HD and USB LG DVD rw. USB Cannon printer. + Internet being connected on the 23rd Feb.
(SFF style - so I can’t actually install into the box, thus all the USB attachments)

Q1. I would like to dual boot the system and keep the 80g for Windoze and install Kubuntu on the external drive. When I install, will it see my 80g HD and install Grub so I can dual boot? Not sure how the Grub works.

Q2. Before I install should I turn on all the USB devices? E.g. Printer, dvd.

Q3. Due to Linux being on the ext. HD I would assume turning the ext. on before booting and off after computer shuts down would be the method to use??

    Thanks again.

    We greet you intrepid Kfellow!
We hope this is not too late.

We tried to move from Slack to Ubuntu - It was a less than pleasent experience.
It is our experience that it is far faster to save data - not apps - and do a clean install.

If you have managed to use Slackware you will find Kubuntu easier - if not dumbed down a bit.

Besides being FAR faster, the differences in storage schemes (with now hundreds of files - anyone else remember Linux on a floppie? ) will make you wish to take up lawn bowling in Antarctica before trying it again.

That being said we are now testing our wits on the Slax modules and predict the U/K/E/X-ubuntu "Bloat" will shortly find a leaner meaner scion emerging with the uptake of the micro modules. We will have our Official softdrink AND our MP3's.
