New to linux, few kubuntu questions.

hello, im new to kubuntu, and i've just got a few simple questions, as im a total noob when it comes to linux...

ive go it installed in my dell inspiron 6000, its working really well. after some tinkering i finally got the wireless card to work and pick up on a network that not even my windows would connect in its final days.

anyways, back to topic... i noticed the little power management icon in the task area displays my CPU frenquency at about half of what its capable... is this just scaling it back when it doesnt need it? to conserve on power? also is there a way to disable that at all?

im also a bit new to installing things on linux... i downloaded firefox from their webpage (the tar.gz file) but im a bit clueless on how to properly get it installed (i went though the package manager and installed the one in that list), but i'd like to know how to install that type of file w/out downloading it though the package manager.

thanks for any advice in advance...

Firefox: One of the easiest ways I have found is to go to " Installing Firefox on Ubuntu" at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/firefox and use the script method.

Installing generally: Have a look at "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntuinstall/

"the little power management icon in the task area displays my CPU frenquency at about half of what its capable" Where is that?

I've noticed that mine always lists both cores of my processor as each running at either exactly half capacity of going flat out which over a few months of usage I cannot imagine is correct. I think its just that the indicator is very inaccurate. If you'd like better stats on how you're hardware is being used install super karamba and one of the many system monitors available for it.
