do i need to reconfigure x?

first i right clicked desktop and went to the desktop options or settings or whatever. then i clicked on the screensaver icon on the left of the window then the background went black. i tried right clicking the desktop and there was no right click menu. programs still worked its just that the desktop bg was black and i couldn't right click. i should of restarted but without thinking, i hit ctrl alt backspace and the whole screen went black. and then i hit the off button on the computer. i booted up in kubuntu again and the screen was just black. i hit ctrl+alt+f1 and typed name and pass. then i typed "startx" and stuff flew up the page and the screen went black again. do i need to reconfigure x now? (btw im on kubuntu 6.10 edgy running on a 7900GS with vesa drivers. also incase it helps, amd athlonX2 2.3, 2 gb ram)

is this correct? "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"

Yes I would try this also, it's the easiest way to solve troubles usually. Anyway, you can read the error log of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log in case of...
