    problem with instaling beryl

hi guys in fairly new at linux, so bare with me =)

ive been checking aroud this forums for a while and also looked around the wiki for help.
im using the steps described at http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...dgy_with_AIGLX

    now here goes..

    first of i used the
    Code:
    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
    command to add
    Code:
    deb [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/[/url] edgy main
    deb-src [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org[/url] edgy main
    in my "sources.list"

    so far so good ay

then its time to ad the GPG key.

    i used the command
    Code:
    wget [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg[/url] -O- | sudo apt-key add -
    witch prints out
    Code:
    .gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
    --12:07:10-- [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg[/url]
         => `-'
    Resolving ubuntu.beryl-project.org... 1.0.0.0
Connecting to ubuntu.beryl-project.org|1.0.0.0|:80... failed: No route to host.
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
now even a nuub like me can understand that
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
    is not good.

so i tried the command about 3 times again(after checking http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ for more info) and on the forth it output

    Code:
    --12:49:52-- [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg[/url]
         => `-'
    Resolving ubuntu.beryl-project.org... 64.15.154.150
    Connecting to ubuntu.beryl-project.org|64.15.154.150|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 2 415 (2.4K) [application/x-troff-me]

    100%[====================================>] 2 415    --.--K/s

    12:49:52 (153.54 MB/s) - `-' saved [2415/2415]

    OK
    sweet pie! 8O

    now on we go.
next i use this line in the termial
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
and it output aloth of stuff. but this cought my eye.

    Code:
    Fel [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org[/url] edgy Release.gpg
Kunde inte ansluta till ubuntu.beryl-project.org:80 (1.0.0.0). - connect (113 No route to host)
well ok for those thats not swedish it translates roughly into

    Code:
    "error" [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org[/url] edgy Release.gpg
could not connect to ubuntu.beryl-project.org:80 (1.0.0.0). - connect (113 No route to host)
well i thought maby the grafical interface would make a diffrence.
so i start "adept manager" and check the repositories.
    and i find
    Code:
    deb [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/[/url] edgy main
    deb-src [url]http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org[/url] edgy main
    right where i put em.

now i click "fetch updates" and it starts working. but when the program is done nothing has changed in the pakage view.

so at this stage im lost. do anyone know what i should do?
    thank you for your time.

btw i also posted this thread here...

    redhawk,

I do not have the deb-src repository in my list for beryl. Try commenting that out and attempt the install.

      Re: problem with instaling beryl

      i removed that line.

      and i ran the
gpg command again just to be sure to have the right key again.

      then i ran
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
again. now it seems that i got the pakages...

      next i run the
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install beryl
now the terminal output something in swedish about dependensies

      so i try

      Code:
      sudo aptitude install beryl
      instead and it outputs

      Code:
      redhawk@redhawk-laptop:~$ sudo aptitude install beryl

        Re: problem with instaling beryl

red, if it's any consolation, my experience getting Beryl up and running was long (like a week) and clunky too, so don't feel like you're the only one. But for two weeks now it's been working great (well, "great" for a beta package, I guess).

I'm pretty noobie at Linux, but I don't think you're going to get success from a broken package ... :P

In my Adept Package Manager I find a total of 16 packages with names beginning "Beryl". If you can't see all 16, you need to play with the "apt-get update", apt-get upgrade", "apt-get clean" and all of those fun things, and then try to fetch updates again until you've got all 16 showing.

But, you do NOT need to install all 16. Here is the combination that is installed and working on my system:

        beryl
        beryl-core
        beryl-dev
        beryl-manager
        beryl-plugins
        beryl-plugins-data
        beryl-settings
        beryl-settings-bindings

That is all you need to have installed.

Today, I will try one that I see called "beryl-settings-simple". After all, it has been too long since I had to fix my system!

This is Intel motherboard and CPU, 32-bit Edgy generic, with Nivida video card.

        Good luck.

EDIT: beryl-settings-simple is not an improvement, IMHO -- I'm staying with the full settings manager.

          Re: problem with instaling beryl

I had some issues with broken Beryl packages this last week as well. I solved the problem by uninstalling all Beryl packages using Adept. I then reinstalled them, and now it works. Give that a try.

Redhawk: It looks to me like a network problem, either at your end or the ubuntu.beryl-project server end. Compare
              Resolving ubuntu.beryl-project.org... 1.0.0.0
              with
              Resolving ubuntu.beryl-project.org... 64.15.154.150
No ideas for a solution, but I think this might be the problem.
