desktop icons

Hi: i need to show my hard drives(hda1 etc. plus other icons) on my desktop.with kubuntu i get samples and install icons only(using the kubuntu cd).if i use knoppix cd it automatically shows desktop icons,such as hard drives etc. any help will be appreciated. thank you.
P.S. i have read a kubunti(ubuntu) text book and can not find the answer:but i am getting older?

Using Dapper Drake (6.06) Windows was mounted and shown by default. In Edgy Eft (6.10) Windows is not mounted and does not show.

Use the instructions about "How to mount Windows partitions (NTFS) on boot-up, and allow all users to read only" at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...s_to_read_only and they will show automagically.
