    Username for Webmin

Probably a really stupid question but....

When I try to login to webmin, it is asking me for username and password. I know my password but have tried a couple of (what I thought may be my) username. No go.

I have a friend who knows about Linux a bit but wants to do things in root as he does in his other distro's. I don't want him to do that unless it is the correct way of doing things.

Could someone suggest how I may find my username?

    Thanks in advance.

      Re: Username for Webmin

When I install webmin on kubuntu, I get this message:

      <<<
Webmin uses a separate password file /etc/webmin/miniserv.users                                                                                              The webmin system uses a separate password file /etc/webmin/miniserv.users
An initial version of this password file has been generated for you. It contains only a 'root' user, with the password copied from the password file.
      >>>

By default kubuntu has NO password for root - you cannot log in as root.  So you will need to copy some other line from /etc/shadow to /etc/webmin/miniserv.users for this to work.

I'm not sure what you mean by trying to find out your username.  Your username is what you must type in whenever you log into the system normally (i.e. logging in to KDE).  Once in KDE, you can find it out by pressing Alt-F2, and entering:
      kdialog --msgbox `whoami`
