First, I'm sorry that KFN went down this morning, and only came back up just a few minutes ago (9:00 PM Central Standard Time give or take).
This morning I did my 'routine' maintenance, logging in to our server and running apt-get update followed by apt-get dist-upgrade. I do this all the time. There were three apache2 packages that were to be upgraded. During the process, something went wrong, at least one of the apache2 applications being upgraded got removed without being upgraded, leaving our web server non-functional. I tracked down the problem to the package apache2 (it got removed). Simply installing it fixed the problem.
I don't know why this happened, and that it did is troubling. This kind of SNAFU within Linux shouldn't happen, but it did. Again, sorry for the time that KFN was down today.
