Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server.

Schedule
Ubuntu releases every six months, one month after each Gnome release.

KDE Schedules

During development, the KDE project sets goals in features and dates for upcoming releases. This way, the team knows when it would be a good time to add a new feature or when it's time to focus on cleaning up any bugs in preparation for a release. Any plans are tentative schedules and the final dates are generally decided on the kde-core-devel mailing list.

Hello world,

I'm happy to report that the Lucid Lynx is now open for uploads.

We do not recommend that users upgrade to Lucid at this time; it is
likely to be in very considerable flux until the initial round of
merges is complete. As ever, any developers wishing to take the plunge
at this early stage should ensure that they are comfortable with
recovering from anything up to complete system failure.

Automatic syncs from Debian will begin shortly. Because Lucid is an LTS,
autosyncing will track the Debian testing series for this cycle, rather than
Debian unstable as we normally do.

We expect this more conservative policy for package syncing will enable us
to prepare a more stable long-term support release...

Hola!

OK, I am starting to plan on how to go about doing the documentation for
Lucid. Right now there is no doubt that a complete rewrite is necessary for
us to even have something decent, as updating the old documentation would
just be a royal pain. As some of you may know we use a topic based
approach, though quite fake in our setup, and a bit of a pain as well. I
have started outlining the topics to cover with our system documentation
[1].

Note, if you are interested in helping to contribute to the docs this
session, please do speak up...

Hi,

I've got many "does not compile" reports from everywhere, I hope I addressed
all of them now with these updated tarballs:...

As those are major changes again and it is late already, I'm delaying public
announcement until tomorrow.

Rule of thumb


As the KDE SC 4.4 Beta1 packages are dropping to the repository ( > [ubuntu/lucid] kdebase-workspace 4:4.3.80-0ubuntu1 (Accepted)) it is good to remember the rule of thumb of the KDE development packages:

KDE 4 packages should start dripping to the repos soon, as always, it's better to postpone the upgrade until you can get all the KDE essentials to avoid possible version conflicts.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.


Known issues

• The nv driver used by default for nvidia video chipsets on the LiveCD is reported to lead to X server crashes...
• The firmware for the bnx2 driver is not available on the alternate and server installer images at install time...
• Manual partitioning in the graphical installer is reported to cause the installer to crash...
• Clicking on the installer icon on the Kubuntu desktop CD fails to launch ubiquity...
• The Kubuntu alpha 1 desktop ISOs are too large to fit on a CD...
