I don't see the rock....distro being dependent on the default browser. At least not in Kubuntu.

Personally, I love FF and when chrome comes around I will rethink that

KDE 4.3 Beta2 packages are starting to make it to the karmic repos (second beta release due on tuesday, June 9th)

Once again, I'd recommend holding the upgrade until you can get all kde essentials (mixed beta1 and beta2 packages are likely to render your kde installation broken or even unusable).

As of tomorrow's daily builds (assuming they build successfully,
anyway), GRUB 2 will be the default boot loader for new installations,
pursuant to the grub2-as-default discussion at UDS.

We do not expect to be changing the boot loader for existing
installations, at least not at this time...

A hint for kde 4.3 upgraders:

Since Beta1, I was experiencing various plasma glitches (occasional crashes, high cpu usage with certain widgets and some graphical glitches). And once Beta2 didn't solve any of them, I decided to dig a bit deeper, and apparently there are some changes in plasma configurations from kde 4.2 to 4.3.

I decided to remove the old configurations and start afresh with a clean config with

rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma*

and it seems to have fixed the issues. Give it a go if you're experiencing plasma related "bugs" in kde 4.3. Obviously, clean kde 4.3 installations should not be affected, only upgrades from 4.2.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on October 29th, 2009.

New features in Karmic

• Linux kernel 2.6.30
• hal deprecation started
• New Intel video driver architecture available for testing
• New default compiler
• ext4 by default
• GRUB 2 by default

Known issues

As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Karmic Alpha 2. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

• Due to the conversion to GRUB2, installation will fail if you try to install Karmic Alpha 2 on a system with other OSes installed. This will be fixed for Alpha 3. As a workaround in the meantime, you can choose to use GRUB1 instead
• After installation from the desktop CDs, the system will fail to reboot cleanly and you will need to manually power-cycle the system. This wll be fixed for Alpha 3.
• The likewise-open5 package is currently non-functional because of an incompatibility with MIT Kerberos 1.7. The likewise-open package (version 4) continues to be usable, and likewise-open5 will be fixed in the near future.

I mean will we have to pay attention to which grub is being installed. The grub in my mbr is from jaunty so will it be able to read a updated alpha2 grub?

And what about likewise-open package 5. Will that be updated without our knowledge?

There was a GRUB2 annoucement (>GRUB 2 now default for new installations) , and it told:

We do not expect to be changing the boot loader for existing
installations, at least not at this time; this is an inherently risky
operation. (Remember that we don't even automatically reinstall the boot
loader when we upgrade to new versions of GRUB Legacy, let alone when
changing to a complete reimplementation.) However, if you wish to
upgrade your system to GRUB 2, then see this page for instructions...

Same here. It seems that if you do a new installation (alpha-2/daily) you need to tinker with the GRUB 1/2. The brave testers > Topic: Please help test grub2. At the 8th page the "super.rad" is/was wondering:

anyone know how to chainload grub2 from grub? Fedora 11 is my main OS so have grub installed to the MBR, Ubuntu is installed on /dev/sda5 and grub2 is installed there...

My guess is: no. There are packages:likewise-open (version 4) and likewise-open5. This seems to be same as with the Jaunty.

If you manually install the likewise-open5 it will remove the 4 as the 5 has: Conflicts: likewise-open and Replaces: likewise-open.
