Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server.

Schedule
Ubuntu releases every six months, one month after each Gnome release.

KDE Schedules

During development, the KDE project sets goals in features and dates for upcoming releases. This way, the team knows when it would be a good time to add a new feature or when it's time to focus on cleaning up any bugs in preparation for a release. Any plans are tentative schedules and the final dates are generally decided on the kde-core-devel mailing list.

Thanks for the information and links Rog, much appreciated

I installed kde-neon again to check out how KDE 4.3 is coming up, and was quite impressed. Fixes and improvements all around (both desktop and applications), including often requested configuration options (wicd solid backend, activities per desktop and separate dashboard...just to name a few).

Still alpha (so bugs here and there), but seems fast and quite stable.

Can't wait to see KDE4.3 Beta on my karmic installation

Karmic Alpha 1's underlying technology for power management and laptop Fn key maps was moved from "hal" (which is going to be deprecated soon) to "DeviceKit-power" and "udev-extras"...

Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Karmic Alpha 1...

• There are no desktop CDs with live systems available, since the current kernel still lacks support for the "aufs" file system.
• English language support is not installed by default. This, and full support for many other languages is currently not installable due to openoffice.org-l10n failing to build.

Version conflicts

KDE 4.2.2 packages should start dripping to the repos soon, as always, it's better to postpone the upgrade until you can get all the KDE essentials to avoid possible version conflicts.

I think that this is still valid with the upgrade from the KDE 4.2 to the KDE 4.3.


A way to do the upgrade and left the KDE 4.3 Beta1 packages to wait

apt-show-versions provides a safe way for users of mixed distributions to upgrade their systems without getting more of the less-stable distribution than they had in mind. For instance, it is possible to upgrade just your unstable packages by running after having installed the apt-show-versions package:

# apt-get install `apt-show-versions -u -b | grep unstable | cut -d ' ' -f 1`

With the Kubuntu Karmic Koala / KDE 4.2.85:

sudo apt-get install -s `apt-show-versions -u | grep -v 4.2.85 | cut -d ' ' -f 1`

-> Install (upgrade) packages that are upgradeable and don't have version number 4.2.85.


Test:

After the apt-get update there was 20 packages with the version 4.2.85 + other upgradeable packages.

Doing the upgrade with the apt-show-versions:

40 upgraded, 0 newly installed ... and 19 not upgraded.

...and after that (simulation):

sudo apt-get -s dist-upgrade

...
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libkdcraw7
The following packages will be upgraded:
gwenview kamera kate kdegraphics-strigi-plugins kdelibs-bin kdelibs5 kdelibs5-data kdepimlibs-data kdepimlibs5 ksnapshot ksystemlog kuser libkexiv2-7 libkipi6 libokularcore1 libplasma3 okular okular-extra-backends system-config-printer-kde

The KDE 4.3 Beta1 (4.2.85) packages are there waiting that the essential packages are at the same stage.

If there are packages with dependencies to the KDE 4.2.85, they will be installed.


Example:

plasma-widget-network-manager
Version: 0.0+svn966653-0ubuntu1

Depends kdelibs5 (>= 4:4.2.85)
=>
Install (upgrade) of the plasma-widget-network-manager will:

kdelibs-bin (version 4:4.2.2-2ubuntu2) will be upgraded to version 4:4.2.85-0ubuntu1
kdelibs5 (version 4:4.2.2-2ubuntu2) will be upgraded to version 4:4.2.85-0ubuntu1
kdelibs5-data (version 4:4.2.2-2ubuntu2) will be upgraded to version 4:4.2.85-0ubuntu1
libplasma3 (version 4:4.2.2-2ubuntu2) will be upgraded to version 4:4.2.85-0ubuntu1

a bit better version is:

sudo apt-get install `apt-show-versions -u | grep -v 4.2.85 | grep -v "plasma-widget" | cut -d ' ' -f 1`

Since there isn't a karmic thread / chapter yet I will post this here.

I tried the karmic dailys (live / alt) today but with no luck.
Live gave me a busybox error and alt just refused to finish the installation at the software installation part.

So I did a virgin juabty install upgraded to today and did a dist upgade to karmic.

The only error I got was this:

After reboot a few things were missing:
- no mouse
- wrong computername: localhost instead of fintanws2
- menu.list was not upgraded to .30-5-generic version

Logging in gave me the login screen back.

Using startx in recovery worked but again no mouse.

any ideas?

Do you get something like:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/.... (--unpack):

There has been lot of overlapping. I have been using the force :

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/<PACKAGE>.deb

- menu.list was not upgraded to .30-5-generic version

Are there /boot/abi-2.6.30-5-generic, config-2.6.30-5-generic, initrd.img-2.6.30-5-generic, System.map-2.6.30-5-generic, vmcoreinfo-2.6.30-5-generic, vmlinuz-2.6.30-5-generic ?

Have you tried ?:

sudo update-grub

Any errors ?

Thank you rog,
I had tried grub-update from recovery but I guess the install wasn't complete as I got:

kernel panik:VFS

at boot

sudo apt-get -f install

from recovery mode worked fine.

I had to reboot to get my computername back to normal.

One funny thing I noticed is the panel setup.
Everything is centered on the panel so I had to introduce a spacer to get the clock over to the edge the way I like it.

Looks good and fast for now
