IntrepidIbex

Intrepid Ibex is the code name for Ubuntu 8.10, scheduled for release in October 2008.

Releases

Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server.

Schedule
Ubuntu releases every six months, one month after each Gnome release

Summary

With KDE moved to a 6 month release cycle, consider if Kubuntu should move to a cycle which matches KDE. This would mean releasing Kubuntu in February and August, shortly after the KDE release and 4 months after the Ubuntu release...


Outcomes

From the discussion, we considered the advantages of syncing release schedule to KDE are not sufficiently great as to merit overcoming the disadvantages created...

As per the latest Kubuntu meeting, we are considering making 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) fully KDE 4. We will take whatever KDE 4 version is released at that time, most likely 4.1.2 or 4.1.3.

Anyone can start a blueprint though some software design or development experience would be useful. KDE Schedules

During development, the KDE project sets goals in features and dates for upcoming releases. This way, the team knows when it would be a good time to add a new feature or when it's time to focus on cleaning up any bugs in preparation for a release. Any plans are tentative schedules and the final dates are generally decided on the kde-core-devel mailing list.

Dear developers,

According to the published Intrepid release schedule at
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule>, the first Intrepid alpha is
scheduled for today. Due to a number of factors, however, chief among them
the current division of developer attention between the upcoming 8.04 point
release and Intrepid, the alpha release will not be made available today.

We are making every effort to get an installable alpha image together in the
coming days. Watch this space for further information, and in the meantime
please help us get the archive in a consistent state as described on
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelo...e#Consistency>.

Intrepid Alpha 2 delayed

Dear developers,

Since ISO testing for Intrepid Alpha 2 has been progressing slower than
usual (perhaps testing ISOs for three weeks in a row is a bit tiring ,
and usable desktop ISOs have been delivered late, we don't yet have a
confirmed-good set of ISO images that we can release as an alpha.

As a result, Intrepid Alpha 2 is not being released on Thursday (in your
time zone or mine!); we are instead aiming for a release on Friday once the
images have been validated.

If you'd like to help us complete this image testing to get Alpha 2 out the
door, please coordinate with the fine folks in the #ubuntu-testing channel.
Otherwise, we ask that you please hold off potentially CD-disrupting uploads
for another day as part of the soft freeze.

Thanks Rog. The North American mirrors are still getting the packages this morning.

It says "Linux 2.6.27". I assume that means "with blacklisted e1000e module" still, which means I'm stuck unable to use a kernel higher than 2.6.26 until the kernel patch is released, due to my Intel Gigabyte ethernet chip.

Does that sound about right to you?

I thought that it was problem when you were using initial alpha-6:

... Alpha 6 CD images will not be re-issued for this fix, so
affected users are advised to either use daily CD images once a resolution
is in place, or to wait for the release of the 8.10 beta, due to be released
on October 2.

A problem that could result in corruption of the firmware on Intel GigE ethernet hardware has led to the disabling of the e1000e driver in the Linux kernel included in Ubuntu 8.10 Beta. This is my hope -- I'm not sure when "after Beta" starts, but perhaps tomorrow or the weekend ...

I'll grab a daily build tomorrow and try it.

This problem kind of snuck up on me -- 2.6.27-4 was running so well last week, so after a few days I removed the old 2.6.26 kernel, leaving only 2.6.27-2 as a "backup" kernel. Then, an update blacklisted the e1000e driver module, killing my wired connection, and apparently at about that same time the linux-headers package for 2.6.27-2 was removed from the repos. So when I went back to try to install the Nvidia driver on 2.6.27-2, no headers were available.

Oh well, such is the life of early adopters!

This takes advantage of the upstream NVM protection fix in
commit 4a7703582836f55a1cbad0e2c1c6ebbee3f9b3a7.

Set the hardware to ignore all write/erase cycles to the GbE region in
the ICHx NVM. This feature can be disabled by the WriteProtectNVM module

the machine must be power cycled before trying to enable writes.

This Intrepid release lives up to its name by including many changes, but there are some features that are not yet available in KDE4.
