Re: Be Free With KDE 4.0!

Finally got KDE4 loaded on an old Dell PIII 1Ghz with 512MB Ram and Intel 82815 video chip set. When starting KDE4, I get the initialization screen and then sometimes the desktop appears for a moment and then the screen becomes a bunch of colored lines and kds starts "booting" again. How can I change the screen resolution to prevent the constant reboots?
      KDE3 is using 1024X768

Can you actually log in and load your desktop, or does it crash before it gets that far?

Have there been problems with KDE4 and laptops? I've been testing KDE4 on my Desktop. Haven't touched the laptop yet.

So now that the KDE 4.0.1 bugfix release is out, when will that be in the repos? Do those of you who have the latest release running find that it's somewhat stable?

OK I installed 4.0.1 and have been playing with it all morning, it's not nearly as buggy as some on the net have been saying. The bugfix release must have really squashed a lotta them. And there's quite a few things that need to be polished, but it's already better than the 3.X branch. And this is gonna be the default desktop in Hardy? That's gonna rock!

Display settings have never worked for me. I have to edit the /etc/x11/xogr.conf by hand.

It just never worked and I am not worried about it.

Tell you what I would love to do, but I don't know if it is at all possible. I would love to just run ALL the KDE4 stuff and only the KDE4 stuff, so would it be possible to uninstall the kde3 versions or not? Or would I end up borking everything?

Yes, you can do that; you would need to know a few commands, though (not all the apps have been ported from KDE3 yet). Check out this link for more information on uninstalling KDE3.

Well perhaps I didn't explain myself correctly I meant could I run in KDE4 all the KDE4 apps and get rid of the KDE3 versions without upsetting anything, not completely uninstall KDE3, as I would like to retain the core of it in case something went awry. For example, there is a KDE4 version of Gwenview and of course a KDE4 version of Konquereror but because the KDE3 versions are there as well, it all looks very busy and full. It would be nice just to have the KDE4 versions available.
