The principal advange of what the Linux Foundation has provided is that it's distro-agnostic. A person could go from one distro to another without having to engage in additional processes of enrolling platform keys.
But do understand: their keys still chain up to a Microsoft-controlled root. Yes, technically they come fromVerisignSymantec, and it's Symantec who receives the $99. But Microsoft exerts too much control. The key exchange and signing process requires Microsoft-style file formats. And Microsoft could at any time revoke the Foundation's keys.
So while the Foundation's project makes it simpler for distros to add compatibility for UEFI firmware, and while the proejct increases the likelihood that such distros will just work out of the box, I'm not happy that there remains the "Microsoft blessing" on the whole thing. I will continue to recommend that people disable Secure Boot.
