It is a setting in VLC media player in Tools / Preferences / Video Settings / Video / Display / output
The default setting is "usually" "Automatic" ...
I have found it especially useful when using an older graphics card and or other metal when VLC will play "the sound" but one gets a "black screen".
It provides an instantaneous fix with restart of VLC no system restart is needed.
