With my vote I mean the open-source version Memtest86+, of course.

…and once in every one or two years I discover that a memory module I bought second hand or that was installed in an older computer that I salvage is defective.

Missing the option for "Hmm...what does THIS thing do?"
But that is just probably a subset of #2
tbh I can't recall using it for any other reason over the past 24(?) years.

In my limited experience, bad memory has always caused any boot to fail, so no need to run a memory test.

From my computer technician days and also from personal experience I may say that this is often, but not always, true.

The source of this poll was working with a new Kubuntu VM and seeing memtest86+ in the /boot folder. Made me wonder why we're still installing this by default.

While I can see a reason to have it available to boot to from the LivsUSB, I see no reason to install it by default. If a user wanted/needed it they could install it themselves after initial install.

I agree, but perhaps this it to make the user feel more "safe" or to make it available to the user in case he does not have a (spare) USB stick or internet connection?
