Grub 2, legacy boot, Win 7 security fix and Linux conflict

I try out different OS distributions. Currently I have Windows 7 (64 bit) and Kubuntu 14.04 (64 bit), installed and they are the two OS's I use most all of the time. But I also have additional partitions with other stuff installed, Debian, Mint, etc. UEFI seemed too complicated to use given my limited abilities in Linux so my BIOS is set for legacy and I boot with GRUB 2.

Once and a while I update Windows 7 with the security patches that Microsoft provides. Recently one of them failed to install (KB3033929). I'm not the only person that ran into this problem as documented by the two following links.

My question; is there a simple way around this? Or should I take the advice proposed in the second link and just wait for Microsoft to fix it?

I can't just set my BIOS to boot Windows as suggested in the first link, mine doesn't work like that.
