[SOLVED] have OS4 with kde -- can't put anything on desktop

    Hello,

I just installed os4 (the linux kind, not mac). this particular version (I am not sure which) has kde. I think it's the latest.
I am not able to put anything on the desktop. I have looked through the main menu, however I must admit that alot in there I don't understand.

I really need to be able to put stuff on the desktop. anybody have an idea how I can make this happen.

    thanks

Well, we are a Kubuntu Linux Support Forum, not OS4. That said, what did you install it on to? Desktop PC, Laptop, or Notebook?

os4 the discontinued linux distro, at least as shown on distrowatch
      or
blacklab linux, which is on the os4online website?

Either way, a bit confusing, as they look to be Xubuntu based distros.....

What stuff are you trying to put on the desktop?

If you are running a KDE setup, the default allows for adding widgets, but not folders or files. If you wish a traditional desktop, you can get that quite quickly by right-clicking somewhere on the desktop, select "Default Desktop Settings", and change the Layout to "Folder"

Look here for more info on the KDE desktop

        Hello Snowhog,

'we are a Kubuntu Linux Support Forum, not OS4. That said, what did you install it on to?'
it is a desktop computer. os4 has been xfce, but changed to kde, so I tought I might get my question answered here. kubuntu can't be much different.

        Hello claydoh,

'you can get that quite quickly by right-clicking somewhere on the desktop, select "Default Desktop Settings", and change the Layout to "Folder"'
        it worked.

for me, there are more questions than answers about what happened there. I think you are correct about all of that. it was close to the top 10, then suddenly vanished. I read in a few places that there may have been controversy about the name being so close to mac. I think it is now blacklab, it would be nice if the forum there was more popular. not many people there to answer your question. it is a great distro though.

I will check out the link you have provided.

thanks for the replies. I will mark this thread as solved.

We will try as well as we can to help, even if it may be an unfamiliar distro, but I must say if you wish good support and a good KDE desktop, you are already in the right place , and would have to say that giving Kubuntu a try may well be the superior choice

I definitely like the forum. good people in particular.

will keep the distro in mind. I really liked ubuntu, but something went wrong when they introduced unity. somehow there were bugs everywhere and stuff was hard to find. hardy heron was awesome.

            thanks for the reply.

Exactly, Claydoh! Snowhog wasn't trying to discourage questions not related to other distros. We even answer questions about Windows on this forum, but running a Linux distro can get you an answer quicker, especially if it is Kubuntu, because that's what most people on this forum run.

We definitely are not Unity here in Kubuntu-land (though that is quite stable now), and as you have seen, KDE is quite different as well.
