    Fancy router

Does anyone knows for sure about router with these features :
option to block things with like host file blocking
option to block things with blue tack like list , emule p2p list and such
option to use adblock or similar
option to block content like peer guardian
all this in one router not some high end enterprise gizmo too complicated and expensive
and easy to configure for regular joe (me)
so that whole household network can be uniformly protected and i do not have to dilly dally with each device on the network ever again .

Is this too much to ask for in one device ?

    Yes.

You might look into openDNS for more security and automating a hosts file script to update all your computers at once. AFAIK, the few routers that have a place to block specific hosts require manual entry of each one and are limited to a few hundred lines. Any decent filtering using a host file will have 20,000+ lines.

I don't know of any way for a router to deterimine what traffic is an add vs. regular content, and if there is - it won't be configurable by a "regular joe."

Hi there ! Yes i already got openDNS going , i also found out about DD-WRT and this http://www.dd-wrt.ca/wiki/index.php/Ad_blocking , but it is little too high kung-fu for me for now .
This may be a start but it is going in right direction . Another thing i found was NAME BENCH in Kubuntu repos .
It should benchmark all dns providers and help me find fastest one , then i can look into that dns providers options . Maybe there is some better then openDNS.

I use namebench too, but it's for performance, not security. In my area, Google and Level3 are the fastest but openDNS isn't far behind.

if i were going to buy a new router today i would go with this one. . its got 128MB or RAM + 1Gbit LAN and WAN, the stock firmware for the tplink devices is not bad. If it gives you problems that model supports DD-wrt its also among the easest to flash simply upload the "factory-to-ddwrt.bin" version of the dd-wrt from your model.

Interesting , i have e3000 that used top of the line , had best reviews and now it is abandon ware since there was no updates since it came out . and dd-wrt takes 2 flashes with mini and then full firmware . It is something to look in to .

You have asked for some sophisticated functionality. With networking gear, "high kung-fu" is the price to pay for that, I'm afraid.

Then it is time for student tobecome master !
I am considering flashing my E3000 with DD-WRT and learn to add functionality as i go . In years since dicovering Linux it was nothing but learning all the time , sometimes fun sometimes not so much ,mostly out of necesity and this seem like another one . Considering i never took a computer course in my life i am doing well , i'd say .I have been running Linux most of the time on and off since 2007 ,learned to set up NAS , little bit of SAMBA , printer and file sharing beetwen Windows and Linux so it is time to move up . And English is my second language to , so if it sounds little weird , things do get lost in translation . Will let you know how it goes in next few days ,since i am taking 2 weeks of holidays i will find couple hours to flash router and see what happens . As for TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 , it is nice but i will postpone spending money for now , if i can .

I use dd-wrt myself, and you can do some fancy stuff with it (within hardware limits), but make sure you read up thoroughly before attempting to flash (there is brickage involved).

Some routers are picky on which versions/builds you can flash and there may also be some flashing quirks.

the dd-wrt.com website and their wiki should have plenty of info to get it running (provided that your router is supported).

i posted that because when its time to upgrade my current Router that is what i currently plan to buy. the router i am using currently has never had an issue and is mostly the same with a less powerful processor and 1/4 the ram of the new model (32MB)

This is what i have ,and i will flash it in next few days . Also use it as a learning device before commiting to something else and i hope to know and understand that new something else before i plunk hard earned cash which is always in short suply anyway.

I'd recommend getting used to using DD-WRT it's an awesome piece of software!
