A friend new to linux said he heard of a system monitor that is transparent and the info runs on the desktop like a screen saver . Has any heard of this ?

You know, every time any of my system monitors have layovers in the big hub airports, they always seem a bit transparent once they finally arrive home. I think they spend too much time drinking in the lounges.
I suspect your friend is referring to Conky.
