    Recommend a program

Like the title says, recommend a program, any program. Something that you have found useful, cool, interesting, or fun. Whatever you'd like. Ill try to recommend one every couple days to keep the thread going. Ill keep a list of recommendations in this post and try to update it often.

    Today, I recommend Anki.
    http://ankisrs.net/
Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy. Because it is a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn.
Anyone who needs to remember things in their daily life can benefit from Anki. Since it is content-agnostic and supports images, audio, videos and scientific markup (via LaTeX), the possibilities are endless. For example:

    learning a language
studying for medical and law exams
    memorizing people's names and faces
    brushing up on geography
    mastering long poems
    even practicing guitar chords!
Its a flashcard program. You can easily make your own flashcards, or, what Ive found really useful, is that you can download other people's flashcards. When going through a flashcard deck, you can tell the program how difficult the card was. Cards that were rated as being more difficult will be reviewed more often until it becomes easy to remember. Flashcards can contain text, pictures, sound clips, and even video. It intigrates really well with KDE too (although it doesnt like oxygen transparent).

    Its in the repos. Enjoy!

Good idea. I would like to mention Hydrogen, which is a nice and fun to use drum machine. The controls are simple and intuitive, but it does appear to have a decent amount of settings, for those who are more serious about music. You can find it in your package manager or get a development version from the PPA here:

      Quicksynergy
Description-en: Share mouse, keyboard and clipboard over the network
Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between
multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its
own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users
with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its
      own display.
      .
Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse
off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of
all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems.
Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop
together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires
a password to unlock them all.

Also in the repositories. I use it to control my second laptop from my first.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Brilliant idea Whatthefunk! If you feel you have the time it would be great if you could list them in your post with a short description, for easy access and overview.

          http://leechcraft.org/

          there's a Launchpad repo http://leechcraft.org/download#Ubuntu

Algoscore - I'm totally untalented with music but I find this very interesting - music by math.

          (it's in GetDebs repo - http://www.getdeb.net/software/algoscore )

Lyx - Best way to enjoy the powers of Latex while keeping it all very easy. This is one of my must install programs and I reccommend everybody, especially students and authors, to give it a try.

Kdevelop with python plug-in - Seriously, by far the best python IDE. Heard its quite good for C++ too

Sage - Great for working with symbolic math using python style syntax

            Rstudio - Best R IDE

pdftk-qgui - Great for doing a lot of quick things with PDF's e.g. concatenate documents, remove watermark etc.

Lovely! That's the brilliance of the thread - we don't know all gems out there - so we share them. Maybe if each come with a genre tag it'll make things easier on you.
Someone posted this on KFN and I can't find the post now but all credit to him/her... makes sense post it since there are some new ppa's here

                    Ted, Easy rich text processor.

Ted is an easy rich text processor. It can edit RTF files in a wysiwyg manner. It supports multiple fonts and can print to PostScript printers. Qalculate!

Useful for all sorts of math things, including mundane number conversions (from one base to another), say for tracking addresses/registers in the MBR or whatever.

Thread made me realize how many neat programs may exist that I'm not aware of or not using. Seems I get by just fine with the standard stuff (DigiKam, K3b, and such).
