    IBM says Linux is "everywhere"

This is a very, very, good overview of "what Linux is", and where it is. Surprisingly it is in 32% of netbooks. It has a breakdown of the different hardware platforms and what Linux is doing on them.

There is the "usual suspect" article in the left column of the Kubuntu front page that asks "why Linux can't seel on the desktop" from Slashdot.

This article doesn't answer that question but does give good information on where Linux is and why.

Of interest from the article, percentage of devices running linux:
    1.5% desktops
    32% netbooks
    60% server
    25% new mainframe installations
    90% supercomputers
    25% smartphones
    40% tablets

Even the low 1.5% for desktop use is not that bad. Forester research estimates that there are well over 1.5B desktops/laptops in use in the world, so 1.5% = 22.5M linux desktops/laptops.
