The Linux client for Spotify is freely available and, despite what you might have read elsewhere, works for free accounts.
The only downside for me was that I needed to set up a facebook account so I could login.
I had installed a version of it in 11.10 which, following my upgrade to 12.04, crashed on launch unless I had deleted the spotify folder in /home/.cache.
However, an update came through from the repo tonight, which works great.
If you are using spotify under wine .. dont! Install the native client and let them see how many customers they have.

PS: I have no connection with Spotify
