Steam, oh Steam...

I decided to log in to my Steam account, creaky with decay and rust. It had been a while since I went there, as I do not have game-friendly gear. Why I picked a business focused laptop, I will never know. Anyhoo, after spending a week reestablishing access to it, installing wine and steam, installing Portal 1, joining valve's Linux group, taking the survey in hopes of getting in on the early beta, and rediscovering my hardware limitations, I came to the realization that I have never run Steam anywhere but in Linux, and having signed up in 2005, it is very likely I have never used it outside of Kubuntu.

Am I the only one who dislikes these applications like Steam and Desura? I just want to play the game, I don't want to have to open an application just to open another application.

I dont really like Steam either. But if Steam is willing to port games to Linux, they will quickly become my new best friend.

Steam , and Desura are places where the smaller game developers can have a place to host advertise and sell their content to users easier (aside from Steam's DRM, of course). Installing a game with steam also offers to create a desktop icon and a menu entry, which conveniently shows up KDE's Wine menu and directly launches that game.

I know people like gaming on their computer but I find the controls awkward. I use Xbox 360 for gaming.

I think it really depends on the game and how well the developers have mapped the controls. First person shooters are better on PCs I think. Same with role playing type games. Racing type games and sports games are better on consoles.

Personally I would rather have all my games kept up to date and have my saved games backed up onto their cloud so that I don't have to worry about which computer I login to when I want to play a game.

Same here can always hook up a controller to a pc if needed.
