500 GiB is too large by an order of 2000 times. 100 to 250 MB is fine.

My bad, I meant 500MiB, that's the default size of the partition that is on my machine. Also, if I make that partition on gparted and format /dev/sdda (Eliminating the EFI partition) is that something that I can boot from is I do the typical grub install-boot rescue routine? Like how does that work?
