Weird audio problem- .wav file changes output device

I'm trying to help a "friend" listen to a .wav recording, which is silent on her computer, an ancient windows XP desktop.

The recording is confidential, but in desperation she sent it to me at home, and when I tried to play it on Kubuntu 20.10 I heard nothing. So I fired up the trusty Audacity and it showed plenty of sound in one channel. After some mucking around amplifying, and exporting, I checked the system's sound by playing a You Tube video in Firefox -
silence. Checking the "audio volume settings - plasma" (right-click speaker icon in the system tray), audio, advanced tab, the "profile" was set to "Digital Stereo (IEC958)". Changing it back to "Analog Surround 2.1 Output" and sound is back, even when playing the original .wav file as I received it.

How is this possible? The file broke sound on two very different OS's.

And if anyone who knows Windows XP could tell me where the analogous setting is, that would be very helpful.
    Regards, John Little
