    burning movies

It's been a while since I burned movies I downloaded to DVD and quite frankly, I can't remember the software I was using at the time. It had its own problems, namely every so often the audio would just drop out for no good reason, and it wasn't consistent about doing it. What I need is a few suggestions for good software to rip DVDs to a format I can use in my DVD player in the living room (it's not Blu ray yet, unfortunately). Any thoughts? Thanks

Doing this has always been a PITA.

I used to use dvd::rip to copy vidoes off the disk, but I think it's not or not often maintained any longer. Now I use handbrake with great success to make DVDs directly into mp4 files. I rarely burn DVDs any more as all my devices are either on my network or have USB ports.

As far as making DVDs had success with devede in the past. There's also a package named movietrans that has a set of command line tools to make DVDs. Basically, devede lets you add simple titles and menus functions (and a background image if you wish) then it creates an ISO to burn with your favorite coaster-maker.

You probably already know this, but the cool thing about using handbrake is you can reduce the file size by giving up some resolution or extra stuff like multiple audio tracks. Then you can make a DVD with 2 movies or 4-5 TV shows or maybe more on it. Saves discs. I guess it depends on your desired outcome.

The best thing to use for burning movies is flammable liquid poured over it and a lighted match.

But seriously, I have had success with devede and kdenlive. Kdenlive has the advantage that you can edit the movie then create a DVD iso file which you can then burn to a DVD-RW using k3b.

To rip (copy) DVD's I will second oshunluvrs suggestion about using handbrake.

Kdenlive has always crashed for me. Do you see that Nick or is it only @here?

The only time I've seen kdenlive crash was when I was using the cut tool to cut out bits of the video. What I did was to save the file before using the cut tool then if it did crash I would then reload and continue where I left off.
