I found this interesting link about using VLC and your webcam to set up a video stream.

I tried it out and it works very well.
I had about a 1 second delay between my actions and what appeared in the video. And, of course, what you see is a mirror image of you, so if you move your head to the left the video's "head" moves to the right ... etc....
